Black Swallowtail

He's lost most of his wings. Looks like summer's coming to an end.

Hangin' Out

We don't get many butterflies in our backyard this time of year, so I packed up and headed to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, where they have a butterfly pavilion that's free on Tuesdays. The lighting was tricky to work with, but the experience was fun.

How to train your dragon(fly)

I took the kids to a local wildlife refuge, except it was noon and a million degrees, so the only wildlife out was dragonflies, and they were so busy trying to find shade it was nearly impossible to find one still enough to take a picture. This isn't, by far, my best dragonfly shot, but I do like his color.

Bad Camoflauge

One of my all-time favorite photos of mine. This guy crawled up into the center of a hydrangea flower and stopped as if to hide.

When there's no ocean...

These surfers found a wave where two rivers came together and were condensed through one drainage pipe.  The surfing was an amazing show of impromptu coordination. One surfer would dive in and surf until he wiped out. He'd ride over the wave while the next one dove in. They kept this continuous line moving. Fascinating to watch!

Paradise

I took this one year ago today. I wish I were here right now.

Instead I'm still stuck in suburbia.
